Operation Clucker at RSPCA NT

When two chickens unexpectedly arrived at RSPCA NT, they quickly became the newest—and most unusual—members of the HPHH family. Officially adopted into our programs, the chickens have given participants in Darwin a refreshing new focus, especially as poultry is not often seen at the shelter.

Affectionately titled Operation Clucker by participants, the project has opened up a unique learning opportunity. One of the chickens is blind in one eye, which has encouraged participants to practice patience, empathy, and careful handling. Approaching the chickens calmly and thoughtfully has become a valuable way to build confidence while learning new skills.

For participant Heidi, the chickens have sparked a special joy. She’s been exploring the RSPCA yard and nearby land to collect logs and natural materials for enrichment, helping to create a more engaging and comfortable home.

Together, Intro to Handle and Care participants have expanded the chicken yard near the jackfruit tree, built garden beds, and are now modifying the space to prepare for the wet season. With waterproofing and regular improvements, the chickens will stay dry and cosy no matter the weather.

The project continues to inspire creativity, with ideas for chicken swings, feeding buckets, and new enrichment activities on the way. Each small contribution adds up, making Operation Clucker not only a fun initiative but also a lasting way for participants to connect, collaborate, and care for animals in new and meaningful ways.
