The Quiet Power of Friendship

At our Hunter Valley program, Jax, Dylan, and Beck proudly call themselves “The OGs” — a nickname that began as a joke and evolved into a badge of honour over the last four years as they have shared growth, loyalty, and a deep friendship.
They’ve stuck together through the evolving HPHH programs, even joining the very first ‘Explore’ Employment Pathways pilot program in the region. What’s remained constant through change is their bond, built on mutual respect, quiet compromise and unwavering support.
Each brings something unique to the group. What could have initially been a barrier—their very different personalities—became a strength. While it took time to warm up, those differences are now the foundation of their mutual respect. Beck prefers working with small dogs, and the boys make sure she gets that time. Jax and Dylan love active shelter walks, and Beck joins in or ensures they don’t miss out. They regularly challenge each other’s views through thoughtful conversations and respectful debate, always listening with care.
Their loyalty to each other is matched by a shared desire to include others. New participants joining their group often feel welcomed and supported by the trio. With so much experience under their belts, they’ve become mentors to new participants, passing on not just skills, but the sense of belonging they’ve built together.
Watching the three of them together is a reminder of the power of moments of genuine friendship, built quietly over time.
