Jaleesa’s Milestones: Driving Towards Independence

Earlier this year, Jaleesa joined Happy Paws Happy Hearts (HPHH) through the Handle program with Mackay State High School, generously funded by St George Foundation.

Since then, she has stepped into the ‘Explore’ Employment Pathways Program and in that time, has achieved two incredible milestones: gaining her driver’s licence and completing her Certificate II in Agriculture—all while still at school.

With her licence and first car, Jaleesa has embraced new responsibilities, including driving her siblings to school each day. This independence has motivated her to seek employment so she can further help out and continue building her future.

Though humble about her Certificate II achievement, Jaleesa has shown that she is well suited to roles where care, attention, and training animals are central. Senior Program Trainer, Terri, has commented on the blessing of witnessing her growth firsthand, sharing that Jaleesa has developed patience and perseverance through animal training, and is now applying those skills to real-life situations. She is more confident reaching out to employers, engaging in interviews, and overcoming barriers.
