A leap of trust
At our feline-loving location, Ten Lives Cat Centre in Hobart, a beautiful moment unfolded between participant, Thomas, and a curious black kitten named Jake.
Jake had climbed to a high place (as many cats and kittens love doing), but once there, realised he wasn’t quite sure how to get back down. He peered over the edge, curious but hesitant, clearly unsure about making the leap.
Thomas noticed immediately.
Without hesitation, he slipped off his flannel jacket and held it open beneath Jake like a makeshift net—much like the traditional life rescue nets once used by firefighters. Calmly and patiently, he positioned himself to give Jake a safe landing option.
After a few tentative glances, Jake launched himself into the jacket. Thomas caught him gently and rewarded his bravery with warm, affirming snuggles. From that moment on, the pair spent the rest of the session playing and cuddling and it was clear to everyone in the room the special bond which had formed from that leap of trust.
This was more than a clever rescue. It was a powerful display of empathy, observation and creativity. Kittens are naturally curious as they explore the world, and in a shelter environment that world can feel especially unfamiliar.
Thomas’ attentiveness to Jake and his curious learning turned a moment of uncertainty into one of trust. He became a safe place in Jake’s new world—creating a positive association that will support Jake’s confidence as he continues his journey toward a forever home.
Moments like this capture the true heart of HPHH: learning, observing, responding with care, and building connections🐾
