How volunteering with HPHH helped this man on his recovery journey

Lee became a volunteer with HPHH over two years ago as a part of his rehabilitation following a health scare that left him unable to return to work.

HPHH was the perfect fit for Lee as our mission resonates deeply within him. He has a ‘soft’ spot for dogs, particularly Border Collie’s, for their intelligence and beautiful nature, and he loves our participants and their support workers.

Lee recalls his experience working with two beautiful Border Collies and countless other dogs and funky creatures at RSPCA Dakabin.

“Finally, after two years, we had not one but two Border Collies in a session on the same day. Needless to say, there were plenty of thoughts about adoption that day!” Lee says.

One of his most memorable and “perhaps unusual” moments at HPHH was working with Jorge the Rooster.

“I never expected that I would have the opportunity to work with a farmyard animal in session. We were able to demonstrate that any animal can benefit from training, but also show that all animals – great and small – can provide valuable and extremely enjoyable experiences for all,” he says.

“Over a number of sessions, we were able to demonstrate the effectiveness of clicker training with animals, and even taught him how to identify recycling waste by presenting him with two options of rubbish types to choose from.”

Each week, Lee loves to interact with our participants and their support workers to express gratitude for the role that they play in assisting each participant.

“I also love creating fun and memorable moments wherever possible,” Lee says.

Being a volunteer with HPHH makes Lee feel like he’s a part of “something much bigger” than himself.

“Volunteering with HPHH is not only very rewarding but also so much fun! No two days are the same, and the variety of animal interactions is endless,” he says.

“Everyone is so welcoming, engaging, and I love working alongside each and every member of the team to create positive change for the participants and rescue animals in the program.”

At HPHH, we rely on the community and the goodwill of volunteers. People like Lee and his involvement in our community allow us to continue supporting isolated Australians and rescue animals. In return, he experiences rewarding moments and making a difference in animals' and participants' lives.  If you share a love for animals and a passion for helping people, volunteering with HPHH is an incredible opportunity to contribute to a program with immense potential and commitment.
