From Anxiety to Independence: Jay’s Journey
At Happy Paws Happy Hearts (HPHH), some of the most powerful moments are those that reflect just how far participants have come. For Jay, this journey has been one of courage, growth and increasing independence.
When Jay first joined HPHH, she was experiencing severe anxiety and found it difficult to attend group sessions in a traditional classroom setting. In response, her pathway shifted from our classroom-based programs, into our Train program where participants engage in hands-on activities within the shelter environment. With this shift, Jay was able to step into a more open and flexible space where she could build confidence at her own pace, at a more hands-on learning approach, side by side with animals.
Since this change, Jay’s HPHH Program Trainer, Alix has reflected that Jay has gone from strength to strength.
In a recent milestone moment, Jay arrived at session having driven herself and attended without a support worker. This represents a significant step forward in her independence and confidence, both within and beyond HPHH.
Equally special is the environment that has supported this growth. The Thursday morning Train group at Dakabin has formed a strong sense of connection and camaraderie, who welcomed Jay (and other new participants), showing great support to one another along the way. These shared experiences, all side-by-side with the regular hands-on care, training and socialisation of rescue animals where participant build new skills and confidence each week, have in-turn fostered genuine friendships in the group. So much so, that participants are now staying connected outside of the walls of HPHH!
Jay’s journey is a powerful reflection of what can be achieved through the right environment, meaningful participation and a supportive community. Through building skills, confidence and connection, she is not only engaging in sessions—she is building independence and creating a life that extends well beyond them.
