From Anxiety to Independence: Jay’s Journey

When Jay first joined Happy Paws Happy Hearts (HPHH), she was experiencing anxiety and found it difficult to attend group programs in a traditional classroom setting. Given the nature of HPHH operating in small group settings, Jay showed real courage in her willingness to try different a pathway to find where she felt most comfortable to engage and learn—ultimately leading her to transition into our hands-on Train program.
The Train program is designed to build independence through structured, team-based activities within the shelter environment. Participants engage in meaningful animal interactions while supporting daily shelter operations through tasks such as feeding, cleaning and general husbandry. These responsibilities encourage participants to develop confidence, competence and a strong sense of responsibility, while deepening their understanding of animal behaviour and learning how to respond with compassion and care in a dynamic environment to support the wellbeing of animals in care.
Through this transition, Jay stepped into a more open and flexible learning space and found herself building confidence at her own pace, side by side with animals. Since then, her growth has been remarkable.
In a recent milestone moment, Jay arrived at session having driven herself and attended independently (without support), a significant step forward in her confidence and independence, both within and beyond HPHH.
Just as important is the community around her. The Thursday morning Train group, held at RSPCA Dakabin has built a strong sense of connection, supporting one another through shared experiences. Through hands-on care, training and socialisation of the rescue animals each week, this group of participants are not only building their skills in animal care and training, but they have formed genuine friendships, with many now staying connected beyond sessions.
We are so proud of Jay and her courageous heart as she has navigated a learning environment that supports her needs, and now steps into sessions with growing independence and confidence.
