The power of patience

Tank is a young, big, goofy at heart, Johnson Bulldog who came into care at Dogs’ Homes of Tasmania.

While a loveable lapdog, when he entered the new and uncertain environment of the shelter, Tank found things overwhelming. His big nervous bark made it clear just how unsure he felt when people passed by—an unfortunately misunderstood behaviour to potential adopters.

When introduced to Tank, the Happy Paws Happy Hearts (HPHH) Hobart participants were delighted at the opportunity to work with him. In one session, they approached the adoptions area, and Tank’s kennel, calmly, slowly walking past to give him space to feel at ease and safe.

On their return walking back through the area, the participants along with Program Trainer, Wendy, paused at the fence, offering Tank time to observe. Slowly and curiously, he approached the wire, accepted a treat, and stayed close by.

Seeing this small moment of courage, Wendy invited Jason, a HPHH participant with a strong interest in working with animals, to have a turn at engaging with Tank.

Jason approached thoughtfully. Putting in place some of the skills he has learnt in his HPHH sessions. He avoided direct eye contact with Tank, moved side-on so as not to look confronting, knelt quietly at the wire, and waited without expectation. The group observed this interaction, watching on as Tank cautiously made his way over to the wire. While Tank’s body language still showed signs of uncertainty, he gently and curiously accepted a treat from Jason through the barrier. Wendy shared just how meaningful this moment was, as Jason demonstrated incredible mindfulness in his interaction, remaining calm and patient, then rewarding Tank with a treat for his bravery.

It was a simple interaction, but a powerful one.

Watching participants put into practice what they’ve been learning at Happy Paws Happy Hearts, while instinctively prioritising an animal’s welfare, is incredibly special. Furthermore, knowing that these moments of kindness, patience and trust all play a part in helping animals like Tank build trust and confidence, and move closer to their forever homes makes them even more meaningful.

In a delightful update, Tank has since been adopted.
