Purpose in Practice: Showing Up for the Animals 🐾

In our Basics and Care sessions at Happy Paws Happy Hearts, participants are supported to build confidence through social interaction, while learning safe and foundational animal handling skills in a structured, supported environment.

Across a number of sessions, Program Trainer Georgie has introduced a simple but powerful start-of-session routine. As participants arrive, they are invited to take on small, meaningful responsibilities using cue cards to guide them in setting up the space for the session’s activities with animals. Each task contributes to creating a calm, safe and enriching environment for the animals to support their health and wellbeing while preparing participants for hands-on interaction.

For one participant, this routine has sparked something truly special. After finding a sense of purpose in playing her part, her support worker shared that she woke up half an hour earlier than usual—something that rarely happens—so she could arrive on time and be ready to contribute.

Georgie reflected on the moment as one that perfectly captures the growth she is witnessing. The participant’s confidence continues to build week by week, not only in her engagement with the animals but in how she communicates, asks questions and shares her own experiences.

This is the power of purposeful participation. What begins as a small responsibility becomes an opportunity to build routine, confidence and independence. Through these moments, participants develop important life skills—showing up, contributing, and taking pride in their role—while experiencing the meaningful impact they can have on the animals in their care. 💞
