One tiny pup, one giant step of courage
Katie is a participant at our Hunter Valley location, who is a devoted kitten lover. Dogs—especially energetic ones—are typically outside her comfort zone and can sometimes cause anxiety and discomfort.
Her fellow Friday session participants understand her discomfort and consistently support her when dogs come into session, working as a team to create an environment where she feels safe and comfortable to still be involved in the activities.
Last week, we introduced George, a rare Xolo Mexican Hairless puppy in care at Hunter Valley Animal Facility and Rehoming Centre (HVAFARC). George, who in size, almost resembles a cat himself, has a gentle nature and playful spirit. While George zoomed around the room and brought joyful energy into the session, HPHH Program Trainer and fellow participants noticed how captivated and excited Katie was.
Katie was asking questions about George, took photos, and to the incredible surprise of everyone, chose to sit on the floor to interact with him. This wasn’t only a surprise due to showing interest in a pup, but it was a step that can be both physically and emotionally challenging for Katie, who usually chooses to stay seated in a chair for the session.
George happily jumped into her lap, and the room lit up. The group immediately recognised what this meant and openly shared how proud they were of her for stepping outside her comfort zone.

HPHH Team Leader, Nina, shared that Katie was beaming from ear to ear, radiating pride in the courageous step she had just taken. Watching the group celebrate her bravery made the moment even more powerful.
It reflects just some of the magic which unfolds in sessions every day. While many participants may join Happy Paws Happy Hearts for the animal interactions, the true impact lies in moments like these: building courage and finding the confidence to try new things, stepping outside of comfort zones, supporting one another, and discovering new strengths in a safe and encouraging community.
