From toilet rolls to impact for shelter animals

Recently, one of our incredible Hunter Valley participants at Hunter Valley Animal Facility and Rehoming Centre (HVAFARC), took the initiative to begin collecting toilet rolls to use for a dog enrichment activity in session.

What started as a simple task quickly grew into something much bigger. This participant located a large bin and began collecting recycled rolls from everywhere—the local op shops, her home, and even from her support workers and larger community—determined to ensure that the shelter and Happy Paws Happy Hearts (HPHH) was in a good stock of materials to use for enrichment activities.

Enrichment is a key component of Happy Paws Happy Hearts sessions. It creates new and engaging ways for participants to interact with animals, while contributing to a paws-itive learning environment for both. In this case, the toilet rolls are transformed into slow feeding treat dispensers, where dogs work to retrieve kibble hidden inside. This simple tool fosters play, exercise, and valuable physical and mental stimulation—greatly improving a dog’s time in care.

HPHH Hunter Valley Program Trainer, Tara, shared that this moment was so meaningful because it showed this participant taking genuine pride in contributing to the wellbeing of the dogs and cats at HVAFARC.

Her effort extended well beyond her time in sessions, reflecting care, responsibility and independence. For this participant, it reinforced that she, along with other HPHH participants, can truly make a real and valued contribution.

One morning, the HVAFARC Shelter Manager greeted the participant and her HPHH group by saying, “The fun crew are on site!”. Tara watched this participant beam, as she felt recognised, included and proud.

Moments like this capture the heart of HPHH, where small actions grow into confidence, purpose and meaningful impact for both hearts and paws. 🐾
