Finding Connection Through Sign Language — Heidi’s Confidence Blooms

In our Darwin location’s Saturday group, participant Heidi—usually reserved and softly spoken—had a breakthrough moment through her new interest in sign language.

After helping clean cat bowls and litter trays on a busy, hot day, Heidi signed “thank you” and “see you next time” to an RSPCA team member. Her enthusiasm sparked a group learning moment: she and her fellow participant, Cameron, and the trainer all spent time looking up animal signs together, laughing as they practiced signs for “elephant,” “chicken,” and more.

This spontaneous learning moment from a participant interest sparked inclusive communication practices, connection and humour, and participant choice, leaving Heidi visibly proud and joyful following the session.
