Building community through animals in care
In recent months, we have been delighted to welcome several visiting organisations to the shelter to learn more about the RSPCA NT and HPHH partnership and experience firsthand the role participants play in supporting animal care and wellbeing.
This included Dementia Alliance, Autism NT, Hands On People, Guide Dogs NT, Larrakeyah Neighbourhood House and the NT Mental Health Coalition.
Whether it was spending quiet time at-wire with some of the dogs, practising simple training exercises or simply learning more about animal behaviour, visitors were able to see just how meaningful these interactions can be for shelter animals.
Many left with a deeper appreciation for the important contribution HPHH participants make every week—providing additional socialisation, enrichment, training and connection that helps improve animals' quality of life while they wait for their forever homes.
Equally special was seeing the impact these visits had on the attendees themselves, many feeling as though they had made a small difference to an animal's day.
These visits are a wonderful reflection of what the RSPCA NT and HPHH partnership is all about: creating opportunities for connection, fostering greater understanding of animal welfare, and building a community that recognises the value of every small act of kindness—for both people and paws.
