Thanks for making something special at our event recently. What you've just made isn't just a toy — it's a tool. At Happy Paws Happy Hearts, enrichment is one of the ways we help rescue animals feel calm, curious and confident, so they can live their best lives while in shelter and beyond with a new family.
What is enrichment?
Enrichment is anything that gives an animal the chance to use their senses, their instincts and their curiosity — sniffing, foraging, tugging, chewing, problem-solving. For the rescue animals we work with, it's a gentle way to keep physically, mentally and socially active, breaking up the time in shelter while building trust and reducing stress. For the people in our programs, watching an animal find joy and grow more confident one small win at a time, often mirrors their own journey.
Every week, our participants use enrichment activities like these to help rescue animals settle in and feel at home, while giving them a gentle, hands-on way to build confidence. It's a small moment that have a big impact, on both hearts and paws.
Why it matters
For an animal waiting for their forever home, one day in a shelter can look a lot like the next — the same four walls, the same routine, the same stretch of quiet time between visits. Enrichment breaks that cycle. It gives them something to do, something to learn, and something to look forward to — a puzzle to solve, a scent to follow, a game of tug to win. It's a chance to stay active, to grow in confidence, and simply to experience a little joy.
It also gives them a safe way to decompress, and to spend time with people in a positive, low-pressure way — building the trust and social confidence that can make all the difference to their adoption prospects. And it works both ways: every person who sits with an animal, plays a game, or makes a toy like the one you made, walks out our doors knowing they've made a real, meaningful difference — to that animal's day, their week, and maybe even the rest of their life.
